Celebrating Mabon – 21 - 24 September

Background

Mahon, the autumn equinox, is the time to start acknowledging the balance between day and night as the darker nights start to come in. It is the time to give thanks for the harvest and prepare for winter coming in. There are a lot of people who don’t like when the days start to get shorter, it gets colder and it’s darker for longer but it’s important to remember that we need the darkness to appreciate the light.

Gratitude ritual and journal

Once again this is a great time to meditate, journal and express the things you are grateful for. The world goes by so fast and it is difficult to find that time to stop and reflect but even if you can’t find the time in your day to day life, try and find it during the Sabbat’s. Often times we think we have to be perfect and have these perfect lives, we see it on social media all the time and think wow why can’t I be like that. That isn’t real life, real life is a mess, things get in the way of plans and perfection is impossible so don’t compare your life to others, be grateful for the life you have and if it really does make you unhappy, the only person that can change that is you.

Connect with nature

As the fresher days roll in it is now the perfect time to go out on them long walks or get yourself off on a hike before the winter wetness comes. If you can’t manage something long try a walk around the block or even a potter around the garden. Notice the colours of the leaves changing, the crisp autumn air and changes of the season. Embrace it and love it.

Decorate and cleanse your home

Decorating your home for the season can be a lot of fun and it can also help keep that connection with nature going inside your home as well. Decorate your hearth or your alter, bring in flowers, make and hang wreaths and place candles around the home. It’s time to get cosy for the changing seasons.

Prepare for winter

Making plans and preparing your home for the coming months can be fun and a great way of kickstarting the autumn equinox. Prepare for making hearty stews and soups, give the blankets a freshen up, put away those summer clothes and make plans for those rainy days.
